Why CFLs?
The CFL Program from FirstEnergy’s Pennsylvania utilities provides immediate savings on ENERGY STAR® qualified CFLs purchased at participating stores.* By replacing standard bulbs with ENERGY STAR qualified CFLs, you’ll save on your electric bill.
But the reasons to switch to ENERGY STAR qualified CFLs don’t stop there!
More Great Reasons to Switch
ENERGY STAR qualified CFLs are a great alternative to incandescent lighting because they:
- Use up to 75 percent less energy and generate up to 70 percent less heat**
- Provide the same amount of light – but last up to 10 times longer**
- Satisfy different tastes with a choice of decorative styles including bulbs designed for table, desk and floor lamp usage, as well as bulbs for hard-wired fixtures for indoor and outdoor usage
- Complement your surroundings with a variety of bulb colors and intensities, from soft, warm yellow to bright white, to dimmer switch and three-way compatible
- Meet every lighting need with a choice of bulb sizes and shapes

High ENERGY STAR Standards
Since its inception in 1992, ENERGY STAR has become a recognized symbol that helps consumers identify energy-efficient products and practices.
CFL bulbs and fixtures with the ENERGY STAR logo meet strict government standards and must undergo extensive testing to ensure high-quality light production.
You can visit the ENERGY STAR website for more information about CFLs and energy-efficient lighting, as well as appliances, electronics and heating and cooling units.
CFL Safety
Like standard bulbs, CFLs are made of glass and can break if they are dropped or handled roughly. Use care when removing a CFL bulb from its package and when installing or replacing it. Always handle a bulb by its base (not the glass) and never forcefully twist a CFL into a light socket.
Although CFLs contain a small amount of mercury, they are considered to be safe and no mercury is released during use. If a CFL breaks in your home, please follow these clean-up and disposal guidelines from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Note: Do not dispose of CFLs in an incinerator, fireplace or other burning device. Never use household cleaners to clean-up mercury spills.
